The Beauty Battle: Facial Moisturizing Serum VS Moisturizing Cream

Don’t you hate it when you are looking for advice and you can’t find it? That’s what happened to me today.

With all the latest in skincare out there,  what is the real difference? Which is more suited for me – and I am not talking about the brand.

Brands, honestly, are only a partial reason of why anyone buys a product. If this doesnt suit you, it can be from Hermes or Gucci but you still wont buy it. Same for skincare.

Take my current dilemma for instance – To buy a  moisturizing serum or a lotion/cream moisturizer? I googled moisurizing serum benefits and nothing pops up! Nothing!! Even

After rephrasing my searches, I managed to get some info from About.com and WiseGeek.com so keep on reading guys…and choose wisely because I found out this is a myth:  YOU DO NOT NEED BOTH 🙂

Moisturizing Serum

  • Serums mainly deposit nutrients
  • Easily absorbed into your skin
  • Penetrates 3 layers deeper into your skin – helps combat many common beauty complaints.
  • Good for dark spots, early signs of aging, oily skin (so you dont break out further)
  • Expensive, it can easily cost double of your moisturizing cream.

Anto recommends – Vichy Aqualia Thermal Serum (for oily-sensitive skin that needs hydration. Normal skin is able to use this too)

If this is your first serum and you are not middle-aged yet, I would recommend this as your virgin serum. I switched over to serum recently and it’s fantastic! Light-weight and not oily at all.

Usage: Apply on a clean face after toners in the day. Best to apply serums before bed and after toners as it is better absorbed overnight.

Moisturizing Cream or Lotion

  • Moisturizering Cream/Lotion deposits moisture and hydration to your skin
  • A moisturizer has larger molecules than a serum so it penetrates only the first layer of the skin
  • Good for all skin types for general care
  • Affordable
  • Available in most skincare ranges and department stores

At the end of the day, decide what your skin needs.

If it is fine now and doing well with a moisturizing cream, please continue to use it but if you need a bit more help in fighting those beauty battles, give serum a try to go deeper into your skin.

  1. This is such a useful post! I have combination skin that is also sensitive. It’s very hard to find products that tackle both these problems. I have used creams since I was 12 and recently switched to a serum/essence but it ended up drying my skin out too much, thus making it oilier. At wits’ end about what to do with my skin! Will try Vichy after reading this post.
